How to Attract New Clients and Keep Them Too

Posted by Nadia Burgess on November 14, 2016

How to attract new clients for your beauty businessA huge part of creating a successful business is tailoring your products and services around the demands of your client. Having a loyal group of customers is what will keep your beauty business thriving and, if you know how to attract some new customers and hold onto them, you will be able to grow your business with ease.

Create Your Portfolio

First things first, you need to show off what you can do. From the moment you perform a treatment on a live model, start recording your progress. With permanent cosmetics particularly, each client will need a tailored treatment unique to them, so collecting great before and after photos will help you put together a well-rounded portfolio to show your potential clients a wide range of skills and techniques.

Present everything in a professionally printed booklet or folder and use it as a tool to show clients when they come in for a consultation. A professional looking portfolio shows customers you’re experienced, versatile and, most importantly, skilled!

Market Yourself

Marketing covers much more than the huge campaigns you see on TV or in glossy magazines, start small and you can still see some great results.

Most of us use social media on a daily basis so why not utilise your existing following and promote yourself using before and after shots and treatment availabilities. Approaching people that already know you in the first place will help with building trust and, you never know, they might go on to tell their friends too.

It doesn’t stop at social media though, setting up your own website will give you a little corner of the internet to talk about your business and really sell yourself. Having a place to link enquiries to and keep visitors updated with the latest news and events is invaluable when it comes to capturing potential customers searching for permanent cosmetics treatments on the web. You can display a Nouveau Contour badge on your site when you have trained with us so that every visitor recognises you are trained to the highest standard. You don’t have to be a tech guru either, there’s plenty of sites you can use which have ready-made templates that you can customise easily to get you up and running in no time.

There’s lots of ways you can spread the word offline too, advertising in local papers and handing out flyers to local shops and cafes. When you train with Nouveau Contour we will provide you with marketing materials to make promoting yourself a breeze. Once you have your materials in hand you can also start attending beauty trade shows and events. Which brings us nicely onto our next point…

Start Networking

Attending events doesn’t just mean exhibiting at them, you can attend them as a delegate too. Meet other like-minded people in the industry and share tips, tricks and best practice. It’s a great opportunity to make valuable contacts along the way. If you do choose to exhibit at a show, do your research into the kind of delegates that will be attending and make sure they are your ideal customers. Have plenty of literature on hand for people to take away with them and, wherever possible, note down some contact details for them and what you have specifically discussed so that you can tailor your follow up calls a few days later.

Practice Great Customer Service

Once you have welcomed a new customer, make sure they have an amazing experience. Choosing to have permanent makeup can be a big decision for your customer so from the very first time they contact you or walk through the door, be professional, approachable and welcoming. Your client may know very little detail of the procedure or healing process so explain and manage their expectations right from the start. This will help give them a memorable experience for all the right reasons. A happy customer will be your biggest asset and are much more likely to sing your praises and share their experience with friends and family. Once the procedure is complete, it doesn’t end there. Keep in touch with a quick follow up call to see how the healing process is going a few days after their appointment. The reassurance you can give to a customer is priceless; it will put their mind at ease and make them feel more comfortable to raise any other queries they have with you.

Follow all these pointers and you will soon be on your way to generating a loyal following of happy customers to help your permanent cosmetics business thrive!

Behind the Scenes – What it’s Like to be a Permanent Cosmetics Student

Posted by Nadia Burgess on November 3, 2016

Permanent Cosmetics Training Course
Being a student at one of our Permanent Cosmetics Training academies is the first step to starting an exciting and challenging new career. But what are the courses really like and what do they entail? We’re giving you a sneak peek behind the scenes for a week of Bronze: All Round Training (ART), courtesy of Abi, the newest member of the Nouveau Contour Head Office team to give you a taster of what to expect when you train with Nouveau Contour UK.

The week begins with a friendly welcome and introduction to the trainers who set out the objectives for the week – coffee and biscuits is a must! The atmosphere is professional yet fun and it became apparent from speaking to the students that there was a variety of reasons for undertaking this course. Some wanted to add Permeant Makeup treatments to their salon offering, some had been made redundant and decided to retrain and some simply wanted a change in career. No matter what the motive, the message was clear, it’s going to be a challenging few days but the information and skills which are to be learnt will be well worth the hard work.

The students had already completed some home study and attended Cosmetic Artistry, and Infection Control and Pain Management courses to prepare for the week of intensive learning and practical workshops. Elite Trainer, Sue Farley was to lead the training – she is the head trainer on the ART course at the Yorkshire Training Academy. Sue’s infectious personality made the class of 7 students feel comfortable and at ease straight away. Another elite trainer, Sharon Skelding; who is also one of Karen Betts’ Elite Permanent Makeup Artists, performing treatments at the Karen Betts Professional Clinics in Yorkshire, Cheshire and No.1 London Harley Street, was on hand to help guide and coach the budding students.

Day 1 – Foundations and First Practice

practice mats

The first day started with theory lessons, these help provide a good solid foundation from which the students will be able to understand crucial aspects of the art of permanent cosmetics, looking at the different treatments, structure of the skin and how to the students could promote and market the treatments for their business. Each student was given a comprehensive manual that they could continue to refer to once they had completed their training.

The afternoon was spent with the students becoming familiar with the Nouveau Contour Intelligent Machine – which is the machine used to perform the treatments. The students enjoyed practicing on mats to perfect different tattooing techniques before they moved on to live models later in the week.

The practical session began with basic line drawing using the machine with lots of focus on getting the pressure and depth of the needles just right. By using comprehensive videos and live demonstrations, each stage was explained step by step and there were lots of one to one conversations between the trainers and every student.

The underpinning message of the day was “practice, practice, practice.” Even after the week is over, all of the students are expected to spend as much time as possible practicing with their new machine and honing their drawing skills.

Day 2 – Colour Theory and Practice

doll heads

The second day kicked off with colour theory. Colour theory is crucial for assessing clients’ skin tone and in turn choosing the right pigment for the clients. It is a very complex subject to get to grips with, but extremely interesting.  After an in-depth discussion about the importance of colours, skin undertones and different skin types, it was time to explore K.B Pro pigments and practice colour matching. The trainers demonstrated how to pick the perfect colours for clients and how to carry out an effective consultation creating lots of two-way conversation and questions throughout.

In the afternoon, it was time for more practical work with lip blush techniques. Starting with a liner and then moving to a circling technique, the students learnt how to create the illusion of perfectly defined and fuller looking lips.

Day 3 – 5 – Lips, Eyes and Brows

permanent lip treatment

The last 3 days of the course is where the practice really came in to fruition; carrying out treatments on live models. The mornings were spent with the students practicing their techniques on mats and dolls heads – affectionately named ‘Betty’ and the afternoons were when the students performed the treatments.  As can only be expected, there were a few nerves before the tattooing began, but there was a lot of excitement and a great buzz in the air.

Sue and Sharon were accompanied by other members of the Training Team to support and oversee each student whilst they carried out their treatments on the models.  Each model received a thorough consultation before their treatment commenced, and after the treatment was performed under the watchful eye and guidance from the Nouveau Contour Trainers. The trainers assisted with the first outline of the lip treatment to help them along then once the treatment was complete, the models were given aftercare instructions to take away with them.

Once the week of intense training was complete, it was time for a debrief. Each student received feedback and everyone reflected back over the week sharing their experiences. There were tears and plenty of excitement, as well as relief! It was crystal clear how much each student had enjoyed the first part of their journey in permanent cosmetics, and although there were nerves about performing treatments without the expert eyes of the Nouveau Contour Trainers nearby, they were reassured support was always on hand from Nouveau Contour. They were officially ready to take the next steps forward in their career as budding permanent cosmetics artists!

Karen Betts Hosts CPCP exam to enable Permanent Cosmetics Artists to gain Internationally recognised qualification.

CPCP New Story

Karen Betts has a long standing association with the Society of Permanent Cosmetics Professionals (SPCP) and is proud to be a lifelong member of the association, and regularly attends and speaks at their conferences. Both Karen and the SPCP are passionate about professionalism in permanent cosmetics, and bringing the CPCP exam to the UK has been a natural development in the working relationship between Karen and SPCP. Karen will be hosting the only CPCP exam in the UK on Sunday, 15th May 2016, at her Yorkshire Nouveau Contour Training Academy.

What is the CPCP examination?

The Certified Permanent Cosmetics Professionals (CPCP) exam was developed by SPCP to provide professional permanent cosmetics artists with a creditable certificate post-training. The certification is a highly regarded certification, which tests all aspects of an artist’s knowledge, with particular focus on safe working practices. Artists who pass the exam may display their CPCP credential as a mark of distinction to clients and health professionals.

Why is the CPCP certification beneficial to permanent cosmetics artists?

The CPCP exam tests all aspects of an artist’s knowledge about permanent cosmetics. It also demonstrates that the artist has currently knowledge of safe working practices in hygiene. It also proves that they are continuing their education in permanent cosmetics. Meeting the entry criteria and passing the exam means that an artist displaying the CPCP title can show clients that they are active in the industry and are constantly striving to ensure they are updated on the latest techniques and training.

What does passing the exam mean?

CPCP certification is a formal recognition of comprehension of a specific body of knowledge demonstrated at the time of the examination and is a certification which is recognised on an international basis. It is a mark of excellence and demonstrates that a certified individual has the knowledge to provide a particular level of quality service.

If you would like any further information or to book your place, call 0844 801 3051. Please note spaces are limited, and this is the only CPCP exam to take place in the UK this year.
